Sole Traders: do your tax returns yourself

This is a very good way to keep costs down for sole traders with low incomes or a profit of under £15,000. Now that online submission is possible, procedures are much simpler and you get a helpful booklet from HMRC with the form.
It seems that there are many less than professonal 'accountants' out there who charge a lot and give a bad service. If your affairs are simple, with a manageable number of invoices, receipts etc. then why not invest a day or two in getting to grips with the basics, then setting aside the necessary time once per year to submit online? Or even use the new, short form that makes postal submissions so much easier, if HMRC sends you one.
The first submission may feel difficult, after that it should be plain sailing. I have been submitting my own returns for years, recently online, and provided that you keep complete and accurate records and take time out to understand the details, you should be able to do it too.
