How do I claim back money from the Inland Revenue for using my own car for work?

  • Rather than starting a new post - can I just ask here - I have filled the form in to claim a rebate of tax paid for 06-07. I too was a care worker in the community, and recieved 25p per mile. Now, where the heck do I send it to? The form just says to your local office. I dont know where this would be, and there isnt one in my town, so how do I decide the correct place to send it? Ive held off sending the thing all year, because I dont know where to send it!!!
    TIA.

Send it to your tax office. The address will be on any correspondence you may have fron IR e.g. your notice of coding.

  • Hiya, the only thing I have from the IR is the PAYE Coding. However its from 2005, and I have changed jobs twice since then. Will it be the office on this form?

Possibly but unlikely. If you know your current employer's PAYE reference (similar to 123/A123B though may have any variation of letters/numbers after the /), enter the first three numbers on this form for the address. Otherwise, ask your employer for the address of the tax office that they deal with.

  • Thanks for that. Ill check my payslip to see if the reference is on there :)
  • My employer pays me 40p per mile therefore am i right in assuming that there is nothing to claim back from the tax man?

    Thanks

You are almost correct. You can claim releif on the difference between what your employer pays you per mile for using your own car, and the approved rates, which are 40p for the first 10000 miles, then 25p for miles over that.

Ring your HMRC office and say you want to claim, and they wills end you a form P87 to complete. You may also have to provide mileage logs if they ask for them, and may have to provide your P60.

Remember that you can't claim for travel from home to work , and back home again.

    Sorry to hijack but....
My OH is a self employed gardener and uses his car during the week to go to different jobs, he keeps a mileage log and I have been working it out at 40p per mile as we use the car at weekends but I didn't want to have to calculate percentage of use etc.
Does this work usage count as commuting and is he therefore not entitled to claim it?
    thanks for your help
