did anyone not know these and most items sold in greggs are not suitable for vegetarians as most people i tell didnt know. Wrote to them and they replied by saying they are not made seperatly to meat ones.

So there is a risk of cross contaimination.

Greggs have no intention of changing this. This includes all sandwiches as well

I used to work for Greggs and would like to know how you define 'made seperately'. The vegetarian pasties when in the store where always stored above any meat products, e.g. in the fridges and ovens. Different tongs where used to serve the two products.

Sandwiches before starting every different sandwich the area should be wiped down, so to minimise cross contamination. Everything is done to minimise the risk of cross contamination between meat and vegetarian products. Surely there is a risk of cross contamination everywhere that serves both vegetarian and meat products...

Edit: This was the Yorkshire section I worked in and there are regional differences in the stores so my experience only speaks for the Yorkshire region.

Please see below the correspondence recieved from Greggs

In answer to your questions the majority of our sandwiches and savouries are meat related although we do have some non meat varieties, for example, Vegetable pasties, Cheese & Onion Pasties, Just Salad Sandwich and Cheddar Ploughman's Sandwiches.

All our non meat products are made using vegetarian ingredients, but due to our processes there is always the possibility of some cross contamination from meat products. The same would apply when shops are making the sandwiches, as there is no designated equipment that is used for non meat sandwiches, although the area is wiped down after making each type. Therefore although we produce meat-free products we do not claim to meet Vegetarian Society guidelines.

With regards to our savouries, they are not baked in a separate oven and even though we have dedicated tongs for our savouries we cannot guarantee that they would be used for meat or vegetarian products.

I hope this has answered your questions and if you have any more queries then please do not hesitate to contact me.

    Yours Sincerely

So as above they do not meet vegetarian society guidelines therefore not suitable for vegetarians

Have a few e-mails along the same lines

hi, i also used to work for greggs for over 7 years in bristol. i agree that all the vegetarian pasties should be stored above meat products and i know i used to do that but not everyone did. for example the drivers used to deliver early and had to put all the cream cakes and pasties away in the fridge and alot of them were mixed up and crem cakes were under raw pasties in the fridge!!!. as for cooking meat pasties and veg pasties seperate i was never told to do this. and we never used seperate tongs.

button16 i agree with you in regards to the way sandwiches were made.

this is my experience of working there
