Not sure to be honest, but they are definately separate entities. Ocado wont deliver to me but Waitrose will!

See fourth paragraph from the bottom in the Telegraph article. This may help answer your question.

Ocado was formed by three former merchant bankers in 2002, and the John Lewis Partnership took a 29% stake in the company. Part of the deal was that Waitrose would supply supply stock to Ocado. So although Ocado sell Waitrose products, it is not Waitrose.

Unlike all the other supermarket delivery services (including Waitrose) which deliver goods from your nearest store, Ocado deliver directly from huge centralised warehouses. The logic is that although your local store may be out of bananas, frozen chips, or whatever, a huge warehouse never will be.

In recent years apparently there had been tensions between the two companies, with Waitrose introducing its own home delivery service (which operate out of its stores), and Ocado wanting to sell non-Waitrose products and to compete on price with Waitrose. Apparently the deal Ocado had with John Lewis also had an "exclusivity" clause which had they exercised it (although they never did), would have allowed Ocado demand that Waitrose stop operating its own home delivery service.

As a solution, in 2008, John Lewis transferred its 29% holding into its pension fund and agreed a 5 year supply deal for its Waitrose goods, and Ocado removed the "exclusivity" clause. So now Ocado can operate independently and without interference from John Lewis / Waitrose.

As they operate independently the same Waitrose goods are priced differently at Ocado and Waitrose.

This is brilliant news, my friend told me the other day. I was pleased with them when it was £3 Mon - Weds and £5 Thurs - Sun, but free is fantastic! I've also had excellent customer service from them. They get my vote!!!

Anyone worried about spending more with them, we have actually ended up spending less as we now meal plan for a week and stick to what we need. If you sign up and use it once and then don't use it again for ages, they'll send you an email offering £10 off £50 spend, ignore that and a week or two later they'll have upped it to £15 off £50!!! now with free delivery that money off will go even further! (that is if they keep the money off vouchers going!)

I'm now in a quandry (sp?) as I have started going at 11am when they reduce everything they are going to reduce that day (you get some great deals on meat). If I start internet shopping I won't get those bargains but on the upside I won't be tempted to buy things on impulse (like the odd bar of chocolate:D, etc). Plus, they're a friendly bunch at my local Waitrose and I have a chat with the staff which makes the whole shopping experience so much nicer. Ho hum, decisions, decisions.
  • Unfortunately the much heralded “free delivery” means that if you don’t spend £50 you can’t have it delivered at all ! According to Waitrose customer services (0800 188 884) “the business has decided”. So the message from Waitrose this winter is “ if you are too old or frail to fight your way to you local Waitrose and push a trolley ‘round, then drag it home on the ‘bus - stay at home, in the warm, go on the Waitrose website choose some stuff then when you get to the checkout and we’ll tell you to Get Lost because you haven’t spent £50 !” Happy Christmas Waitrose, Happy Christmas indeed. Mark Price are you the modern day Scrooge ?
P.S. Apparently they can say “free delivery”* on every order because if it’s less than that you can’t order it ! (how underhand is that ? London-Paris-Peckham)
    * Google Waitrose Deliver and look for Free deliver on every order, Free delivery on every online order.
Incidently Sainsburys & Tesco do charge for delivery but don’t have a minimum order (as far as I can see) Silver surfers this way....
