Selling a Business or Product Idea - HOW?

I have an idea for a new product (several actually). That said, we all have ideas for new products or businesses that we hope might on day make us rich. But we can’t always create a business empire out of an idea. Dragons Den is fine, but even that might be inappropriate. I just want to pass on an idea and maybe be rewarded for sharing a vision or concept. Therefore the next best thing is to sell on that idea to an existing company. Maybe not for much, but maybe enough to buy a new sofa or pay off a debt.

But how do you protect an idea (without spending loads of money) and how do you go about selling yourself and that new widget? All ideas and suggestions welcomed and appreciated?
