Convert 240v electrical items to 12v for offgrid living

I want to figure out how to covert various household electronics to 12v.

This can be done with an inverter but that wastes much electricity.

Some electronic items are already 12v inside. All this then needs is to plug straight into a 12v battery:
- computers
- laptop computers

The idea is to have everything running off of 12v batteries that can be recharged without needing to connect to the grid.

I understand what you are trying to do but would be quite dangerous to you if you do not know what you are doing.
You would have to open the electrical device and try to connect a multi meter to see if the step down would be 12v as some things can be 18v,12v,5v and even a combination as in some amplifiers.

I was feeling quite confident until you said a combination in some amplifiers.

I guess that would mean 240v coming off wired parallel to transformers converting to different voltages, I'd imagine different voltages for different uses; perhaps higher voltage for the speakers, and lower voltage for signal processing.

Still, I wonder what I might want to put into a campervan next

the easiest and cheapest option is just buy the 12V versions you need

To be honest in your last reply it sounds as though you know what you are doing, so basically just put a meter coming from the step down transformer and if it is 12v cut the transformer off and wire in your 12v.

Like amps, there are multiple voltages in laptops and computers also. Some components are 12v, some 5v, some 3.3v. If you take a look at the ATX wiring specs, you'll see.
