I'm on my ownsome this year and had planned to spend the day hiking but it seems it will be a total washout so I'll probably only venture out for an Easter Service and spend the rest of the day indoors with the heating on. :o.

charlottecarter - that all sounds lovely - What a great way to celebrate Easter :D.

I used to go to a church where we had a 'passover-style community meal' in the Church Hall on Maundy Thursday evening that ended by giving each other communion.

We then walked in silence through the church yard to the church itself to commemorate the journey to Gethsemane.

Inside the church, it would be totally dark except for a large candle by the communion table, where one of the congregation would read the account of Jesus in Gethsemane, His arrest and His trial, leaving pauses to give time for meditation and silent prayer.

I always found that the most moving occasion in our church year and felt very honoured to be asked to do the reading one year.

Ooh - same here for me - as a child Easter was a bit like Christmas - it makes me sad not to do something,

Same for me, AMG2B - and I do miss it sometimes. My DH is not religious and there is not a church service anywhere near where we live, but I still try to recall the old Easter feeling if only just for me. Still, to make it special we will have lamb for dinner which we rarely have (not an everyday choice here in France as it is in Britain) and I'm making trifle for pudding which is DH's absolute favourite and I only make it for Christmas otherwise.

I will also cut some daffodils from the garden for extra effect. And hum an Easter hymn or two while cooking. Neither of us is greatly into chocolate, so fancy Easter eggs are wasted on us. There must be more I can do - I'll carefully watch this thread and then maybe I can improve a bit next year.

    Happy birthday to mrsgnomey xx

I'll be off to my parents, full Sunday lunch...roast beef + trimmings.

As it's my parents, the beef'll be overdone, as will the veggies. The yorkshire pudding will be OK, and the gravy will be fab....

But let's face it - it's not about overdone food - it's about seeing the folks and having a smile :)

(I'm not religious and I don't eat chocolate, so that's about all that's left! :rotfl:)

I'm on my own too, I'd really like to do something for Easter, but I've no idea what. I remember when I was younger it was a big celebration and the family use to get together like at christmas. I just feel like I'd like to mark it out so it's not just another day if you know what I mean.
I can't get to church tomorrow, even if I was a church goer which I'm not. So has anyone any suggestions?

I'm trying to teach my kids what easter is about...

On Wednesday we watched Prince of Eygpt to teach them about the passover meal.

On Thursday we had a kind of passover meal and all washed each other's feet - like Jesus did with his disciples. On the table everyone had some silver chocolate coins - representing the silver coins that Judas got in exchange for Jesus.

On Friday we ate hot cross buns and talked about Jesus dying on the cross. We had chicken for dinner and talked about Peter denying knowing Jesus 3 times before the cockeral crowed.

Today we went to a charity egg hunt in our local park and made simnel cake and easter cards for our family.

On Sunday we'll go to church.

On Monday we are having family round for lunch and we will have fish and honeycomb ice cream (not, obviously, together!)- in the king james translation of the bible it talks about the disciples giving Jesus fish and honeycomb when they saw him after he came back to life.

That's easter in our family... x

I'm non Christian but if you will forgive me that is lovely.:o

I don't have a family so it's just another day here.

We attended a Good Friday service on Friday morning, songs, reading, activities for the children - making a crown, decorating egg shaped biscuits and making a collage of the crosses on the hill.

We also made a garden in the church entrance.

DH is on earlies (at work at 6am-2pm), so DD and I will go to our local parish church Easter Service.

Hopefully if the weather is half decent we'll go out for a walk with the dog when DH gets home.

For tea its pork chops and all the usual roast dinner trimmings (would like lamb but money is tight).

Monday DH working again! So nothing planned.

Tuesday we're off to the zoo with DD for her birthday.

We've already been to visit/been visited by family.

  • Morning all and A VERY HAPPY EASTER!

Although I don't get to church as often as I would like (real life sometimes gets in the way IYKWIM:rolleyes:) I will be attending the morning service at our local parish church. After the starkness of Lent, the church looks absolutely gorgeous dressed for Easter Sunday and the smell of the flowers is overpowering.

I will absolutely NOT be doing any shopping. Mass consumerism, public greed and ignorance of old-fashioned family values make my blood boil. I simply don't see why people have to shop every day of the year. In our house we subscribe to the 'Keep Sunday Special' campaign. It is always a day of rest with any 'entertainment' being very OS and including a walk with the dogs, :ja picnic if the weather is good, foraging, a roast dinner, maybe a doze in the afternoon .

I hope everyone has a peaceful and relaxing Easter - whatever you are doing!!
