shampooing carpet - stardrops?

I need o clean my lounge carpet - not any specific stains but its pretty grubby. i haven't got round to hiring a cleaner and thought I'd give it a go myself before spending money on getting someone in. I remember someone mentioning using stardrops - is this only if you have a machine? Any tips on getting it clean manually? I've used though spray syou hoover off before but never been very impressed. so thought I'd go OS and get down and scrub...bu with what?

    Hiya

I usually use liquid washing detegent, Ariel or Surf or i use the tablets, i have a machine and pop it in that as it doesn't foam a lot when i clean it and leaves my carpet super clean and my house smelling gorgeous.
If i am spot cleaning i fill a bucket with really really hot water and a capful of Ariel then i use a scrubby brush and scrub and stains or marks then i use an old towel and jump on the spot repeatedly to soak up the water, after i am done it is very dry on the area just a bit damp but it dries really quick.

I have used allsorts on my carpets(dog and cats so it can get muddy lol and i have cream carpets)i have used strong bleach, weak bleach, washing powder, washing liquid(too foamy) vanish powder lol(rubbish) proper carpet cleaning stuff(is very good 1001 brand). I have found though that Ariel gives really good cleaning and freshening too and hasn't harmed even a wool carpet !!!

Hope this helps you(i haven't tried stardrops but i probablly would lol) :)

Forgot to mention the things i use to scrub or clean with are:

    Hand scrubby brush
the little scrbby brush used for dishes
one of those sponges used for dishes with the scourer on
a normal bath sponge(for lighter spot cleaning when i only want to use foam)
a rough face cloth(take a lot of hard scrubbing though)

and i always have the towels handy to jump on the washed bit as the carpet would stay soaking for days lol

oh also when in a hurry i fill the mop bucket up with a very hot storng soloution of bleach or Ariel and then mop(the stringy type mop) i mop quite heavily and it takes the marks out quick(good for covering a whole carpet-have done my whole house this way in a few hours and it was spotless) but the only draw back is the carpet gets quite wet but towels will solve this lol.

I hope all that lot helps too hehe.
