Advice pls - which cheap cuts best for slow cooking?

Hi!

Now that I have found a good butcher I was planning on stocking up on some nice cheap cuts of meat. Those old forgotton bits that taste delicious when cooked for ages!

Which do you recommend? I have a slow cooker but should really use it more, esp with the energy price rises!

Thanks in advance :D

I'd like advice on this too.

I've recently bought a SC and am starting to experiment.

Today I have a ham shank (£1.45) bubbling away with carrots, onions and potatoes.

I soaked it overnight in cold water though as they can be a little salty.

should also say i have used frozen ( cook from frozen ) diced beef for stews too and it always comes out tender.

I occasionally use lamb neck fillet (£7.99/kg at Costco) - comes up a treat in my SC. Brisket's lovely in the SC. Chicken curry using chicken thighs - yum.

I also put in the diced meat or portions from frozen and they end up so tender. I rarely cook meat in the oven now at all.
The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.

Brisket Now added to list :)

Breast of lamb is pretty cheap, but like most lamb, rather fatty, so best slow roasted so the fat drains off. It could probably be done in slow cooker, cooled and then remove the fat though. I think scrag end of neck (think that's what its called) is also quite cheap when butchers do it, great with pearl barley too.

Hopefully we'll get lots of ideas for our slow cookers :D

Sherratthead - your meal sounds yum! I do boiled bacon that way, just adding some butterbeans for last 30 mins. Let us know how it turn out in SC!

I did a ham hock a couple of days ago - my nearest farmers' market does ham hocks for £1.50 each so I got the biggest I could for the price - LOL.

I cut the fat off and slow-cooked it on low overnight in a mixture of veggie stock and apple juice, with chopped onion and garlic and a few cloves plugged into the meat. Then after removing the ham, I made a bean soup from the leftover cooking liquor (though this is still in portions in the fridge and I haven't tried it yet).

The ham was gorgeous :D
