how do i go about finding someone who emigrated from the uk in the 50s to the usa (might not be alive still but have kids) - they mightve even moved back without us knowing......

I don't have any experience in this but I wonder whether it might be worth contacting the US embassy here to ask what US organisations exist that can help you.
They have a page on their website regarding tracing people in the US.

REFDESK is a really good site to look at. Down at the bottom it has links to US gov records, Phone books, Census info.
Silversurfer is a good one specifically for finding people
