Gambling, doesn't sound very "money-saving" to me !!

Sorry, too risky for me, also I don't have that much "spare" money to "waste".

No, there is no risk at all, really, nor do you waste any money doing it. It isn't a moneysaving thing to do, quite right, it is a moneymaking thing to do, and the rewards are astounding. It is quite resolutely not gambling.

Up to you really, but do have a look at the posts by Innovate, BoltonMinx, and maybe Cornerclose - better still PM them and ask - who have gone for this and made a great deal of money. The first two in particular had never (I think) placed a single bet before trying this out, but are now well into it and making a lot of cash.

I do this much more intensively than many, but my overall profits since August 2003 are over £20,000, tax free, which easily beats any part time job I am aware of - I am naturally risk averse and I don't take chances with my money. Indeed, I've made over £1300 in the last 3 weeks. All of this started with a bank of less than £50, and there is no reason at all why it should take more than 1/2 an hour an evening.

Of course it fails most people's "too good to be true" test, which is I suppose why whenever I explain it to people they look at me as if I'm suggesting they have their granny hung drawn and quartered. But it does work, it is easy, there is no risk, it is not the path to perdition, and if you do it it will make you a lot of cash. Better than stacking shelves or marking scripts, certainly.

So that my name isn't quoted in vain here ;) , I think I'd better join the discussion.

Everything that Tim_L (who is the Board Guide on the Gambling Loopholes Board) says is 100% true.

I won't go into my life's story here but suffice to say I joined MSE last June and hadn't taken even one look at that board because I did, frankly, find it somewhat odd that Martin would allow anything to do with gambling on his site. I am most definitely not the gambling type, and Tim is quite correct in saying I'd never in my life placed a bet on anything before (well, that is, if I don't count 'honourable' activities such as being a shareholder and having a couple of maxi ISAs that are only just recovering from the very sad state they got into since 1999!)

Eventually, however, after I had been through all the other threads, and maxed out my stoozing 'allowance' for the time being, I did snoop into this "sin bin" of a board and got very quickly very interested. This was in early January, and I started my matched betting in earnest on Jan 18. To date, I have made £1,584.87 tax free profit - and whilst I am writing this, I am "earning" another £45 from some football bet. Goes without saying that I could kick myself that I didn't look at matched betting earlier!

I don't work any longer but I am still far too young to do nothing. Matched betting allows me to 'work' when I like, I don't have any boss to answer or any rush hour to endure, and have learnt a huge amount (though still consider myself only an 'advanced newbie'), and there's still loads more to learn, and to earn!

I should add that I know nothing about football or any other sports - that's not a pre-req for matched betting. All you need to do is stick precisely to the principles of matched betting, and you need to keep good records of the whereabouts of your money.

When I started out (extremely gingerly, with a £10 bet!) I was given a huge amount of support by Tim and a couple of others who have been doing this for quite some time. Since then, my confidence has grown a lot, and now I don't blink when I make a bet with several hundred pounds because I know I will make a profit. Tim and the other 'old hares' are still at hand with advice and help, but in the meantime there's also quite a few other newbies and advanced newbies who help each other. It's a super community, and I haven't yet seen anybody drop out or give up.

gandalftheking (and others), it costs you only some of your time to inform yourself about the concept - if you still don't like the look of it after you have looked at the matched betting newbie starter guide - fair enough, but at least you have then made a rational and not just an emotional decision. You would be very welcome in the official matched betting newbie thread - hope to 'see' you over there!

Innovate and Tim_L: I will have a look at the link you've suggested and let you know what happens. If anything I'm good with words, bad with numbers, but will definitely have a look.

could you point me to what would be the best hand holding "tutorial": as in; what websites you need to have open at any one time("lay", bookie, etc?), the exact order that you need to do things, etc. lets say i was going to put £10 on something, in other words how do i start?

i should add that im coming out of a period of being a couple of grand overdrawn, so until new job starts in a month, im time rich, money poor......

Hop over to the matched betting newbie thread if you want to explore this further - there are always a few folks at hand to help you. You can get going with less than £50 but you do need at least £30 to start with. You'll earn your investment back very quickly though.

'See' you there? ;) Go on!

    Back to the OP

Do you have a spare room? I make £350 a month out of my lodger, tax free, and my bills haven't gone up at all (only the council tax but £50 of the rent is technically for bills anyway)

Or a garage? I made £45 a month renting that out as storage last year.

  • Do you have a language school in your town? If so, they are always looking for host families. I have been investigating this, and have found they pay about £95 per student per week. Obviously you need a spare room!

If you are a teacher, have you thought about putting a course together for your adult community college? It doesn't have to be a strictly academic course. They will be putting a brochure together now for September, so it is a good time to approach them.

Do remember you will have to pay tax if you rent a room out for more than the amount allowed by the Government's Rent-A-Room scheme.

I currently earn £200-300 per month from having a number that people dial abroad from - cost me nothing to set up. But it does require like 30000mins of usage per month to generate that sort of revenue.

When I started out only I was using it to call my my gf in Hong Kong and then it kinda moved on from there, at £20 per month onwards and upwards :)

Very ineteresting thread. I posted a message here about a year ago, and got not much out of it. It's amazing how important a good subject title is !

Also I guess there are more, and more people on this forum. I can see a time where a new forum technology will need to be created to cope with this much activity.
