We tried eco-balls but gave up after a goodly trial (9 months) when stuff just wasn't getting clean :(
We now use Asda's own powder but around 1/3 of the amount they say to use - and most of our washes are done @ 30 degrees (apart from bedding/towels which we do @ 60 degrees)

TBH we tried the cold wash too, and I didn't notice a difference but OH prefers the 30 degree wash and as he does the washing, I guess its his choice! :)

We don't use Calgon. Only other thing we use is some washing soda or white vinegar in the conditioner drawer.

i think the best thing is to buy a decent machine to start with - I've had a bosch for 8 years, used daily and not done anything specific to look after it. I use half rec amount of cheap liquid detergent and no conditioner, am in a hardwater area but never used calgon etc and not a single problem.

Same here, I've got a Bosch, use very little powder but I do like Lenor. I'm in a hard water area too but don't use Calgon, it would cost too much. I run the machine on empty when I think about it and have recently started using soda crystals and less washing powder.

My brother used to mend washing machine and he says that liquid is BAD ! It causes the gunk and makes your machine smelly. Powder is best, so he tells me.
  • The best advice I can give is don't overload it - it makes the bearings wear out faster
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Add me to the Bosch-lovers' list. Nine years and counting on mine.

Water softeners are, I feel, a waste of money. As for powders, I like Ariel the best (Persil is a nuisance - they want you to faff around with one of those nets - Ariel goes straight in the drawer) but I have to admit, for economy I use Tesco's own brand and both (bio coloureds and bio normal) deliver excellent results, as far as I can see.
