I used information from Ethical Consumer to select my insurance company. I can't actually remember who I used right now  but they were a broker who sourced insurance from Zurich based on my ethical/green criteria0

What is green about a policy with Zurich?0

greenbee, Is it a car insurance policy which pays money towards reducing your carbon foot print? Using the money to plan trees etc.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0

Seems a contradiction really, cars not being green anyway.
Perhaps an ethical car insurance company is one that doesn't insure Hummers and the like or perhaps gives a discount on home insurance where there are no vehicles on the property.
Sounds like hogwash greenwash.0 -

Car insurance from the Green Insurance Company offsets 100% of your car’s annual emissions.

I've dug out my ancient copy of Ethical consumer.. Car insurance was through ETA (Environmental Transport Association) http://www.eta.co.uk/. They have an ethicscore of 15, with a positive mark for company ethos. It was best buy in Dec 07. It is underwritten by Lloyds, which I guess is why it does well - no negative marks for investments.
There is an carbon offset (I'd forgotten that... I'll have done it twice as I get an offset as part of my package from work too!)
Zurich comes in with an ethiscore of 7.5 which isn't great, but it's one of the best as far as car insurance goes.
There's probably an updated report on the ethicscore website, but my subscription has expired, so I can't check it.
At the end of the day, the greenest thing you can do with a car is not drive it, which is why the ethical issues are more important for me - and if there is a carbon offset, I want to make sure that I do it through a reputable scheme that invests in low-carbon technology and retires ROCs, not just another tree-planting scam...0 -
