I wouldn't buy cracked eggs but if they get cracked after purchase then I eat them.0 -
My mum keeps her own chickens (which certainly look and act healthy) but is still scrupulous about washing the eggs before cracking them to use them. Not sure if its an old wives tale - but she believes any dodgy bugs are on the shell (although makes sense that chickens aren't the cleanest of animals and their poo seems to get everywhere so could easily get on the shell of the eggs).
Because of that personally I wouldn't use a cracked egg if it wasn't me that cracked it... Eggs are virtually the only foodstuff I do wash also but sometimes I do wonder if I have bought into an old wives tale...0 -
It's true, salmonella can live quite happily on egg shells.
I would never advise anyone, least of all a complete stranger, to eat something which could have terrible consequences.
Salmonella is for life, once you've had it you can get flare-ups.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.

Washing eggs??? I've never heard of that before -Am I the only person never to have done this? I can't remember ever having food poisoning
BTW I'm not advising the OP to eat the eggs, just saying what I'd do -but then it seems I live dangerously.0 -

That's the worst thing you can do :eek::eek: Egg shells are permeable, so washing them just allows any bugs that may be on the surface through and into the egg. I rub any of mine that are really dirty with a moist cloth, otherwise they go into the egg rack as they are

The home reared eggs can look dirty with muck especially if weather's been wet - so will wash them just before I need to use them. Similar if I buy farm eggs.
The ones from supermarkets say they are free range but always clean so I suspect they must have been washed - else are they really free range?
And I think its just habit that I'll give them a quick rinse (which probably does nothing at all!!!)
I suspect shop bought eggs must be washed at the packing plant - because I can't believe they are collected up in such a clean condition...0 -
My Gran used to do something with eggs (she kept chickens) & a bucket of water - not sure what that was all about though? Would so love hens too....0

mouseymousey99, she would have been checking if they were okay to eat. If the eggs sink they're fresh, if they float they shouldn't be eaten.0

Years ago, our local chicken farm used to sell trays of cracked eggs for cooking. We ate dozens of them - never did us any harm

I wouldn't think twice about eating them.....well-cooked though.
You're all making me think I should be more worried!0
