  • Do you know anybody who knows anybody that could give you some temporary work? Sometimes it does seem that it's not what you know but who you know

Also, you don't mention parents but can the family help out with a free loan in an emergency?

    Good luck

No unfortunatly Im pretty isolated right now which im pretty self sufficant .. i have some contact with my parents my dad mostly, but money isn't something i can really ask for it usually end's up in a a huge argument about my life choices ..

my mum basically making me feel bad for not being married having kids... yadda yadda yadda... she would have rather i spent my life with a lying cheating waste of space rather than do the unthinkable and divorce.. blah... still sort of trying to find my feet after that whole mess really.

The last loan my mum gave me she actually charged my interest on apparently it was "charecter building" but she didn't tell be she was charging interest till AFTER i'd spent it. (she said it was my choice to leave my husband).

Anyway it's enough to say that im reluctant to even tell her that im being made redundant because im sure she'd find away of blaming the ressession on me too, she'd waffle on about how i had such a bright future and i threw it all away, having kids.

blah .. anyway don't want to dwell on the past lifes not easy but hey it rarely is, i don't regret my choices i have two beautiful little boys and they make me happy......

Just trying to do my best right now.. im focused i've got abit of time to find a new job i'll be ok. I've been with RBS for 7 years so thats at least 7 weeks pay in redundancy and i've got a couple of months to save some cash, stockpile food etc. Most of my loans / morgage etc have payment protection so that should buy me some time too.

Just trying to turn this into a good thing :) been stuck at rbs for too long might be good to see if i can get myself into a nicer job maybe one with a future that doesn't involve me doing the same thing for the next 20 years.

Ok pay day has been and gone, i've worked out my finances and i have my food budget in hand.

Firstly i need to plan my food for this month and plan how im going to make my normal food budget stretch enough, that not only do we not starve this month but make it go far enough that i can add to my growing stock pile.

This month i want to add some stables "rice, pasta, lentils etc" as well as get some cat/dog food and cleaning products in (washing powder, loo roll etc)

    Hi taye,

I'm glad that you've got a bit of a reprieve with the redundancy. For help with meal plans have a look at this thread:

    Thanks your an angel :)

I'm still holding out that it might not happen, we know alot of staff are going but i don't know if i'll be one of them, there is still a SLIM change i'll one of the ones chosen to keep my job.

Either way though i'd like to prepare no harm in it right?

Whats the worst that can happen? i've cleared some debt and got a house full of food not sure that can be concidered a bad thing at any time of the year hehe.

  • What a caring mum you must be to think of putting treats aside for the kids - it is surprising when you are in financial trouble how kids seem to understand but it is nice to give them a little treat now and then. You will find that they appreciate treats a little more when they are not a daily occurence
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Hi Taye, I really feel for you , I think that in the current market contract work will be the first area to pick up as employers will not want to employ full time staff if they are unsure about the economy. Can you contact some agencies near where you are and ask them what the temporary work situation is? I found my way back into work through a short term contract, i went to work on a 3 month contract which was extended and then i was employed as a full time person. You are doing the right things by trying to plan as much as you can, try and squirel away as much you can . Take care.
  • Re the basics (rice, lentils etc) - get yourself down to your local Indian shopping area - you'll get huge bags of this sort of stuff for much cheaper than you'd pay in the supermarkets. Also, contact your local universities - most, like mine, have their own temporary staff (you get paid rate of the job plus earn holiday time), are happy to find flexible hours, even term time only. Also ask about resit exams invigilation - at our uni we always struggle for invigilators for the August re-sits as most of our regulars are on holiday. If you've got an industrial estate anywhere near you, flyer it if you can, point out that summer temp workers from an agency will cost a lot more than your time. Good luck, and don't despair.

may also be worth contacting your local uni about temp accomodation for matuare/foreign students. it may help the cash flow and they pay quite well.

    Sorry to hear your news.

Check through all your outgoings and make moves to cancel or downgrade any contracts (gym, mobile, tv) you might have now so that the notice period is being given whilst you are working.

Also like above if you start on the clicks, cashback and surveys now the money will start to trickle through by the time youre not working.

I spent 7months out of work last year and its the pits but luckily I had no one but me to worry about.

Must be a right stresser to not know exactly whats happening, or when, and to be looking for work but hoping the redundency is a done deal before you get anything so as not to miss out, but at the same time want a headstart on everyone else......

    Wish you the best.
