Could someone help me with a tax question please?

I have no idea if i have posted this in the right forum, so if i havent i am very sorry!

I used to be on Incapacity benefit due to being a wheelchair user, but last year I decided to come off it and find myself a job.

I found a temporary job and this lasted roughly 3 months. I was getting paid £6 an hour.

My question is, during this time I was paying tax, my last payslip states the following –

Taxable Pay – £1,502.09
Tax Paid – £47
Niable Pay – 1,502.09
NI Paid – £35.33

Now I’m pretty sure that the NI that I have paid is all correct, but I’m sure I was told by someone that if my total earnings was less than a certain amount, I would get my tax that I have paid back. Could anyone confirm this for me, and if so who would I have to contact, and is there a certain time of the year I have to wait until?

I am now on jobseekers allowance (as I don’t want to go back on incapacity benefit) and I know it doesn’t seem a lot, but if I am able to claim the £47 back, that would be a great help!

Thanks for reading, and once again I am sorry if this is in the wrong forum :)

The Job Centre should refund the tax when they make your next payment. If they don't, you will need to wait until they send you your P60U (sometime this month) and then you send it to your tax office asking for a refund.

    Hey,

Just a quick update (sorry for dragging this old thread up again!)

I still havent received any tax back, i have made many phone calls to both my local tax office and the jobcentre and i keep coming to a dead end.

I've sent a letter to the tax office with my final payslip, and proof i am now receiving jobseekers allowance, yet they replied stating that any tax i am able to claim back will be paid by jobseekers.

I have called jobseekers and they state they don't have any info about tax rebates and they arent able to tell me if i am even owed any. And then they said that any tax will be paid by the end of May. As mine hasnt been paid yet i am starting to get a bit worried.

Anyone got any idea what i should do?

    Thanks :)

Did you give the P45 from your employment to the Job Centre and have you received a P60U from the benefit office yet?

Thanks for your speedy reply :)

I received a P60U yesterday, but it states on there my pay was £0, taxable was £1,695, pay and taxable benefit was 1,695, and tax deducted was £0. It also says my benefit for current claim is around £2,000

I am really confused, it was my first job as i had been on ic benefit so i've never had to do this before.

Right is seems that you either have not given your P45 to the benefit office or your employment was on emergency tax. Therefore the benefit office did not have details of the previous income and tax paid to calculate the refund.

You will now have to send the P60u and the P45 part 1 to your tax office to claim the tax back. You will also have to fill in any gaps in the tax year - in your case claiming Incapacity Benefit for the period you were not working or claiming Jobseekers Allowance. Do a summary of what you were doing between 6 April 2008 and 5 April 2009.
