I recently phoned an ex-employer (one of my strong referees) to say I would be applying for jobs and would he be a referee. Since I was employed directly by him, he changed departments (from IT to the Business branch), the company was taken over and then he was about to be outsourced that weekend to an entirely different company). He told me that he wasn't actually allowed to give a reference for ex-employees any more, some new rule they'd brought in.
I have found instances of people applying for references before I've even been given an interview too.
And one thing that bothers me is: if they were all to take up a reference without warning, prior to interview, and if I applied for 200 jobs, how peed off would my referees be? Especially as my other top referee is a self-employed lady, running her own consultancy and being away from her home/office 12 hours a day before returning to do a further 4-6 hours' work per day ... on top of having some hideous illness that means she could instantly drop dead... I am horrified that she might be inundated with reference requests.0
