Hi
Quite happy tonight, ive just been offered a job at Tesco's on the checkouts.
Its 10 hours a week, but opportunities for overtime. One question, can i still claim JSA whilst working, as its under 16 hours?
Got the induction tomorrow morning, does anyone know what i can expect from it? and what is the best thing to wear? i was thinking, black trousers and smart/casual top or plain black t-shirt.
Yay, rather excited, after been unemployed since January ive finally got a job, not my ideal job but it will get me some experience and i'm grateful for anything in the current climate.

Well done in getting a new job, although not your ideal job, but like I say a job is a job
I would wear black trousers, black top and black jumper until they give you your Tescos uniform.
The Very Right Honourable Lady Tarry of the Alphabetty thread-I just love finding bargains and saving moneyI love to travel as much as I can when I canLife has a way to test you, it's how you deal with this that matters0 -
You can still claim JSA as long as you are still actively seeking work.
Until recently I had 2 jobs, a full-time day job and 11.5 hours evenings and weekends in a shop. I have been made redundant from the F/T job and so have registered for JSA despite still working 11.5 hours. Apparently this is allowed as I am working under 16 hours and am actively seeking F/T employment to replace my day job.

Congratulations on your new job, well done you! I believe you can still claim JSA, provided you work on average, less than 16 hours a week. Do check this with jobcentreplus though, wouldn't want you to get in trouble with them. It may not be the best job, but in the current climate, it's most certainly better than no job. It may also put you on the "inside track", should any better openings arise, with more hours etc. Once again, well done!!0

Congrats and welcome to Tesco!
I'm a Tesco Manager so hopefully I can help. This is what happens in my store and many of the others.
Most new starters are told to wear dark trouser and shoes and white shirt. Some stores can be quite cold especialy on the tills so I would recommend a plain jumper or cardigan, again black or navy.
The induction is nothing to worry about. It's normally about 2-3 hours and covers the basic health and safety stuff, what you need for wages etc, some basic training (called Bronze for Everyone), a tour around the store and introductions to some of the staff. There should also be a chance to meet with a union rep.
It's pretty informal and more importantly it lets you meet other new staff and colleagues before your first shift.
As I said all the best and good luck.0 -
I work 12 hrs a week and have been claiming JSA for the last month.
All I have to do is supply my wage slips every fortnight as I get paid weekly.2014 Target;
To overpay CC by £1,000.

If you work for Tesco what is the hourly rate for 17 year olds. My DD has an interview tomorrow and is 18 in December. Just wondering what the rate would be, its only a part time job for after college.0

Current rate for a starter is 18+ £6.171 <18 £5.153, Established 18+ £6.496 <18 £5.424. First 6 months is on starter rate. After 6 months she becomes established. 10% discount card after 6 months too!0 -
Check with the Jobcentre first, even though you're working under 16 hours your earnings will be taken into consideration. I work for a company in connection with benefit fraud and you'd be suprised at how many people get caught with the "but i wasn't working over 16 hours". Their argument would be if you were working 10 hours a week and being paid £10 per hour then why would you expect to receive JSA when you were earning £100.00 a week?0

Is your JSA reduced by what you earn?
As someone told me that for example if you earn £40 a week, your JSA will be reduced by the same amount?0
