I need a new washing machine!

Options
Mine has just given up. Can't get it open either...

DS2 is almost 4 and has cerbral palsy, is there anywhere we can get a discounted WM? Not due to reapply to the family fund till August.

Typically it happens when both kids are ill with that throat, ear and UTI infection so I have loads of dirty bed clothes to get clean. Currently using the bath but I'm also almost 20 weeks pregnant and it's not the best for my SPD.

No luck with freecycle, it's all 'wanted' ads, they are really greedy up this way.

The family Fund may still help you under the circumstances. Being without a washing machine used to count as an emergency and they would provide one even if you had received something in the previous twelve months. I don't know if the rules have changed, but it's worth a try. Why not ring them and ask?

Otherwise, try contacting your 'Children with disabilities' team at your local council. They may have funding for emergencies like this, or if not, should be able to advise you on where to go for help. If you are receiving certain benefits, you might be able to get either a crisis loan or a community grant.

    good luck x
  • Hello tiamai_d,

Like kingfisherblue has suggested, I'd contact your county council.
In my area they have something called 'The Fund For Disabled People', and washing machines are one of the things they fund. It's a grant and doesn't need to be paid back.

I assume each county council will have it's own similar scheme.
I would try this first, before you go back to the Family Fund...try and save that for later.

Thanks guys, will give my local council a call tomorrow, although I doubt they will help. Would like to save FF for later, they give us our family holiday. Better start juggling the pennies :D (and try and get the waterproof sheets out the washing machine!)
  • Not much use for a WM, but this trust might interest you.

The other option, is see if there are any furniture projects or charity shops that sell electrical white goods. Even if it just tides you over.
I would go to google, and search for furniture projects, it's worth a shot.
    What county are you??

I'm in South Ayrshire in Scotland. All we need is one to tide us over. On holiday in 4 weeks so if we get one it's out the holiday fund, hence the need to keep it cheap.

Found a site to DIY repairs, so going to give a few basics a go first and hope I can nurse it back to life for another few weeks. I've a cheek though, we got it second hand for free 7 years ago, so can't complain!
