Distance Learning

Hi

I am considering doing a home study course with Oxford Distance Learning. Has anyone had any experience with Oxford College Courses?

Thanks
Jackie

I recommend the Open University too. You can study for Certificates, Diplomas and Degrees and have a wide range of subjects. I cxompleted a couple of Diplomas in Health and Social Welfare and Social Policy & Criminology, plus a Cert in Health & Social care and a BSc Hons Social Policy. Once you start it is addictive though and last year I studied beginners French which I will put towards a BA. He is the link

Also if you are on a low income or a means tested benifit you can study the course for free.

They have only been operational for approx 1 year.

They have also given them selves a name similar to Oxford Open Learning, who have been in business for 10 years plus. They offer courses GCSE, A level, accounting etc. https://www.ool.co.uk

  • Thanks everyone. I was debating between Open University and Oxford College. I will now go with Open University. I just didn't want to wait until November to start, now that I've got the bit between my teeth.

It really depends on the course you are undertaking.
I took a degree with the OU over 5 years and the quality of the courses was variable to say the least.

I also took an advanced diploma in computing with Oxford (university) distance learning which was a part time 2 year course and it was by far the best i have ever taken.

    Good luck with your studies.
  • Hi

I wanted to do a course either in Sociology or Anatomy & Physiology. I was hoping to do a short course before embarking on an OU course, to make sure I still have the ability to study. The Oxford University courses seem very expensive though.

    Hi!

I have studied for many years with the OU both at undergraduate and postgradutae level and I am doing PGCE with them at the moment. I have always found their materials excellent and the tutor support is second to none (my field is languages).
The only disadvantage is that you get very little "peer support" or interaction as you are quite often studying on your own.

    Good luck!

The Open University also do short 10 point courses starting thouhtout the year. These are worth doing to get you back into the swing of studying and also count towards your degree.

These courses have many different start dates thoughtout the year, plus there are many more 10 /15 point courses to do to get into studying

    Hi

Thanks everyone for all your advice. I have decided to try An Intro to the Social Sciences at the OU, starting in May.

    Thanks again
