Getting chased for old electric debt that may not be mine

  • Thanks. They phoned me today so I am not sure if that means they will still visit? Not the easiest of people to talk to as they don't listen!

Basically when I said there were two Scottish Power gas bills one of which I had paid, she said oh the other one must be for the electricity then. No I said that was also paid in full and is for a different amount. When I mentioned speaking to her colleague and him saying that one of the bills was "from another account" she just said well this one (for £168) is definately for your address for the period from end of October (when I moved in) until early January (when the new supplier started). Fine, I said but then what was the other one for £177 for which I have already paid?? I tried to explain that I don't want to pay twice and that I may already have overpaid (as I paid £68 of the second bill ages ago to try and get them to stop hassling me).
Not interested in listening they just want the remaining £100 + £13 'late payment charge'.

Seven years ago when I moved I accidently paid Scottish Power twice (paid to my old address account number and then for my new address when I realised the mistake) - despite writing to them several times this was never refunded and now I am worried that I am going to be forced to pay them twice for the same bill again!
If I have already overpaid by £68 maybe I should start phoning them every day and sending them threatening letters on a regular basis! :p

Do exactly that - let them see what it is like when the boot is on the other foot. :T :T
I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.

STOP phoning and start writing!! Creditors can come up with any old rubbish they like to worry you into paying and you have no proper record of dealing with the situation should this be taken further. All communication in writing - ask for copies of bills and a full account of what has and has not (allegedly) been paid. Read their responses carefully: when debt collectors threaten you with legal action/ court/ bailiffs it invariably says 'may' not 'will'.

The letter from LCS Civil Enforcement wanted £987.95.

Got a letter yesterday from S.R.J. Debt Recoveries asking for £556.10.

They can go swivel. Waiting until 8am and then going to give Eon what for.
