Out of date tins

Hello, Does anybody know how long tinned food lasts beyond it's sell by date.
I have just found a large tin of grapefruit segments whilst clearing out my food cupboard and it has May 2007 written on it.
It is in syrup.
Do you think it is safe to eat?
Thank you

Should be fine open them smell taste if it`s good should be fine, if you feel unsure bin it!
Check out the Approved Food thread and site plenty of us buy and eat food that is beyond Best Before dates and are still here to shout about it.:D0 -
Given that the grapefruit segments are in syrup that should help protect the lining of the can, so shouldn't be a problem. Enjoy!0

Ok, thanks both of you. I quite fancy them for breakfast, should get me going for the day then, and I don't mean to the toilet, lol.0

Best Before dates are totally different to Use By dates. Best Before means eat by that date to enjoy 'optimum quality', Use By dates mean eat by that date or risk it being 'off'. Having said that, anyone see the Tonight programme where Johnathan Maitland ate loads of REALLY out of date stuff (including mouldy bread that he toated!) over the course of a couple of weeks and not one bad reaction?Call me Carmine....
HAVE YOU SEEN QUENTIN'S CASHBACK CARD??0 -
Not a problem so long as it still smells ok.
