  • Though I'm repeating myself from the thread where this was first mentioned I think it's important that people know that for £50 more you could get something much better.

    It's on this thread:

    http://forum.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=Urgents;action=display;num=1102803962;start=0#0

    And I said:

£445 for a laptop with a nasty old 2.4ghz celeron (approximate performance equivalent - a 1.4ghz Pentium) and 14 inch screen isn't a great deal. For £50 more you could get an Acer laptop with far superior 1.5ghz Celeron-M (approx equivalent a 2.2ghz Pentium) and 15 inch screen at Comet* or an Acer at Staples with an equally superior AMD Sempron 2800+ processor (at a guess probably around a 2.2ghz Pentium as well) and a 15 inch screen.

*The Comet laptop is now £479 online.

  • Hi
It says on comets web site that thisis an entry level laptop, reading between the lines I would take that to mean basic. Yet you say that it is a better processor than the Dell one. What kind of performance would you expect from the comet one? I dont want anything that is sluggish. Can you advise, its just really for surfing the web and mabye a few dvd burnings that I would require it.

  • I wouldn't expect it to be to sluggish at least from the processor point of view. It's marketed as entry level because that it the level where these mobile celeron-m processors are aimed. In reality there's not a great difference between them and the Pentium-m/Centrino in performance.

The old celerons are sluggish (I have one) because the small 128kb cache keeps getting filled up and the processor has to wait around for instuctions but these mobile celerons have a 512kb cache which is plenty to avoid such problems. It's really a Pentium-M processor with half the cache disabled but that still leaves plenty.

However adding another 256mb RAM is recommended.
  • Thanks for the info

Just a warning - you can't cancel the Dell order once it is placed as the cooling off period doesnt apply to business customers which is what this offer is aimed at - you probably noted you have to put in a business name when you order.
