Name Change by deed poll?

My partner & I are booking our Civil Partnership for 3rd April next year (venue booked - see the registrar on Thursday! :T)
Although I understand that most banks etc would take the Civil Partnership certificate as proof to change your name, neither of us want to loose our surname, so we though that we would both keep our own last names but double-barrell it with the others - so (for example-not real names) I would become Smith-Jones & she would become Jones-Smith, I started looking into how to do it through deed poll & was suprised by how easy it seems? Do we really just apply, get a certificate & then we can change all our driving licences, bank accounts etc?
Also, If I'm keeping my last name i.e. Jones - would I need to change my passport? Apparently they only credit you with 9 months of the time left on your passport & I've got about 6 years left, from a MSE point of view I'd rather leave it til it expires if that's allowed?
Has anyone got experience of this?
Many Thanks
J x

I have not had any experience of changing name by deed poll but re:the passport, the name on the ticket has to match the passport exactly. Took some students on a trip abroad one year and had no end of trouble with the names not matching passports, it was awful! I would have thought that if the name on your credit/debit card is different to the ones that you want on the tickets, then you may also have trouble IYSWIM.

Hope you get it sorted anyways - good luck ;)

I changed my name by deed poll many years ago. When it came to changing my passport and bank stuff all you have to provide is a copy of the change of name deed that your solicitor will provide for you.
    Hope this helps!!

Congratulations! When I changed my daughters name it was done through a 'statutory declaration', no longer deed poll, but that may have been because she was under 16, and I was doing it on her behalf. It was the easiest thing in the world to do. What takes the time is telling all the relevant peeps afterwards...!!

Just wondering though,as you're doing this as a symbol of your union, you're surnames still aren't going to be the same as each other if you each keep your present surname, and add your partners as a middle or last name. As one is 'Smith Jones', one 'Jones Smith'. You can bet you'll get called only 'Smith', and your partner only 'Jones'. That's waffle - it's still early for me, but hope that makes sense!!

Oh my God! It's going to take me forever to change my name with everyone! I might just keep my own name!!!!
  • Congrats!!!

I changed my name by deed pole before I got married. I got married in Disneyworld and didn't want the hassle of having to provide a foreign wedding certificate to change my name on things. I also didn't want to give up my surname so I double barrelled it. I am yet to change my name on a few things, but I am under the impression that all you need to do is show them the deed pole and that's it. That is how it has worked for me with all the other companies I changed my name with.

I do get called, for example Mrs Johnson, even though my full surname is Mrs Smith-Johnson. It irks me as I am not fond of my hubbies surname:rotfl:Hence the double barrel to begin with!

Thanks for that Alfiesmum - a really useful list. Although am dreading changing my name now lol. Am certainly going to ask the church for about three copies of the wedding certificate!
