Laundry Q - What is a 'darks' wash?

I feel a bit embarrassed asking this, as I'm sure it's something I should know, but I can't seem to find anything on the net or on a search here, so I'll have to ask! What is a 'Darks' wash? I mean, what is included in it? I've never been taught how to do the laundry properly, so I just had to learn how to muddle through…

It was a tip I heard somewhere else - may have been the tv - but it seemed the easiest way to work out what colour to bung pattern and striped stuff in with - especially if its a white and coloured striped shirt
