Rubbish to get rid of.

I have a lot of rubbish in my garden which I want to get rid of in one go, including an old washing machine, old barbecue (both rusty, broken plant pots, concrete slabs, etc. Stuff that won't go in the car. Some of it will burn, so I need to find one of those garden incinerators. The only other thing I can think of is a skip, or one of those trucks with the cage on the back, but I don't know where to find them, or how reliable they are at disposing of the waste correctly. I live in the Sheffield area (nearer Worksop, actually)

Try the classified section...look for something like "we are cheaper than a skip". The driver usually loads. My local man charges about £60 (luton size) which compares well.

Make sure they have a license and aren't just fly-tipping.

  • Some councils will collect bulky items likewashers or furniture.

dont know if you come under sheffield council but info here:

our council here take up to 5 items for £15 once a year, then £30 thereafter. But we dont have a tip within a half hour drive so they make a mint from it as its pretty much theonly way to get rid of stuff.

As border mentioned, check out your local council website, they should have a page listing prices for picking up bulky items, my area its £15 for a fridge, £8 for a washing machine etc. Alternatively if you drive, you could hire a van for the day and take it all to the tip. I did this and it took 10 minutes at the tip to empty the whole van.
  • You should be able to sell, or at least give away the concrete slabs. Someone might be interested in using as hardcore. Try your local Freecycle site.

    Try a hippobag http://www.hippobag.co.uk/product/default.asp

I use these regularly, as it means I can buy the bag, fill it up when I get round to it, and book them online when I want it taken away. They recycle 80% of the waste, which isn't bad.

I'm pretty sure they provide a national service now, and they're properly licensed so you don't need to worry about where the stuff goes.

It might be worth trying to freecycle some of it first though, as people may well want the slabs - and if the broken flower pots are terracotta/ceramic, someone may well take those as broken crocks are useful for gardening.

try ebay as well - i've made about £20 a time for 10-12 slabs that i would have happily given away for free. Both times, the guys who came for them drove about an hour to get here....

You'd be surprised how many people will travel for what they perceive as a bargain.

Local scrap man will take metal items away for free.

The rest, well break them up and put them into the back of the car.

did this with about 450 bricks, about 8 trips over a few weekends.

    1x garden clear.

also, collected 22 rolls of turf for the garden in the back of my clio at the time. Was £2.60 per strip from B&Q, £1.20 a strip from the suppliers, cut fresh in front of me.
