    I quite like this: http://www.comet.co.uk/comet/html/cache/572_287024.html

Well known brand, bright screen, DVD writer, lots of RAM, fast(ish) processor and built in wireless for £449.00, delivered or pick up in store.

PC World do a similar spec but with a 14" square screen that's probably not as bright.

DABS want £40 more for a lower spec one.

http://www.ebuyer.com do an Acer laptop for £370 including VAT but there is only 256MB of RAM, no DVD writer and no built in wireless. If you think you'll never need to back up to DVD that could be the one to go for.
Debt at highest: September 2003 - £26,350
    Debt now: £14,100
Debt free day: October 2008

Have a look at Dell - phone them for a £299 laptop including delivery

    there's a discussion here

It would appear you have to be determined to actually get their 'loss leader' - the laptop is quite a reasonable basic spec.
