Gammon knuckle?

Is this the same as a ham hock/shank?

I saw these in my butchers yesterday. £2.50, so I bought one.

  • Yes, think so.

Boil it to make Ham stock for Pea and Ham soup, strip the cooked meat out of it and use it to make a Chicken and Ham pie.

Not sure Gingervamp - sounds like it could be to me. Is it wider at one end than the other - looking as though it could have come from the lower end of a leg?

Just googled gammon knuckle and came up with this:

that looks like what we call a shank/hock. Does it look the same as yours?

I suppose different parts of the country have different names for them :D.

they are delicious and such good value, my local morrisons sells them off the butchery counter for £1.49, i boil them with carrot, celery and onion and a bay leaf tlll the meat falls off the bone, that makes enough for a good meal for two, mash, peas and parsley sauce.. mmmm and then i use the stock to make tasty soup with any leftover bits of meat...

The meat is also perfect for sandwiches, gamon egg & chips etc
