Some of the prices ML has been quoted for DG is a joke.

Looking for some full size bay windows 6x5 foot x 2 , a dormer refurb and if the price is right upvc roofline and gutters in ayr.
Have you tried turning it off and on again?

  • My 1st post so hope it is o.k. to recommend.

I would thoroughly recommend Ian Hyslop from Caledonian Windows in Ayr, we have had all our windows done by them and they were very reasonable, provided a terrific service and in fact we have had them back out to quote for our extension.

Our friends also just received quotes from 4 local companies including the above and they all came in around the same, good luck.

I'd advise using the Windows Advice Centre
    http://www.windowadvicecentre.co.uk/index.htm

They get up to 10 quotes for you, give independent advice, and inspect the job at the end before you pay the compnay. You also get a 10 year guarantee even if the company go bust.

The Window Advice Centre are not independent - companies have to pay to join, so they only recommend companies that are in their wee club, as it were!

Get three quotes from 3 separate firms - and ask if you can see examples of their work. Ask around friends and family as to who they would recommend. What about colleagues at work, is there anyone in the neighbourhood that's had DG installed recently; what company did they use and how did they get on.

Alot of double glazing firms seem to subcontract work out, especially for conservatories. Neighbours of mine had a conservatory built as they knew people along the road who had one done by the same company they ended up using. They used the same firm but my neighbours got a real botched job which took weeks. You can't always go by the firm's 'reputation' because of alot of the sub contracting. My other neighbours had one put up in less than a week...different firm and no hassle at all. You should be somehow covered by some sort of guarantee with the bigger firms, just depends if they have a decent customer service department.

I'd ask friends and neighbours for advice, see if they know anyone local who they can recommend to do a good job. Or buy the windows you need yourself and get someone to fit them for you?

Check terms and conditions. We got quotes through this company but few firms were on the East coast near us and I think the guarantee is like an insurance where there is a third party involved. As a result we opted for a local company and thank heavens we did as we have had numerous snagging problems but the customer service follow up is excellent and because we are dealing with the a local firm direct, they are out within the week to sort thigs out.

My snagging problems were sorted before I paid the bill, as the Windows Advice Centre survey the work before payment. This meant that they were dealt with the day they were highlighted.

Maybe they're a better option in cities - I'm pretty sure every local company in Glasgow was quoted - but I'd certainly have no hesitation in recommending this service.
