buying a car privately, seller asked for bank transfer

looking at a car later today and the seller (private) said he'd prefer a bank transfer to cash, I assumed turning up with a handful of cash would be a good bartering tool, it always has in the past but he said he'd had problems with cash before or been done and asked if i want the car to do a bank transfer, how long does this take and is it commonly heard of when buying a car?
Thanks in advance

Just one thought - are you meeting the seller at his home? I would be hesitant in doing a bank transfer without knowing where he lives, but then I am rather cynical.
Depending on your bank, the transfer can take anywhere from a couple of hours to a few days. What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0
