I would think it will be OK. I wash trainers regularly and have just bought DS a pair of machine washable walking boots! A backpack will be no problem!Sealed Pot Challenge #8 £341.90

The backpack might be ok but the washer might break up.

I machine washed a filthy beige Kangol bag recently and it came out like brand new
Just run, run and keep on running!0 -
I wash DD's backpacks and lunchbags, pump bags and pencil cases.............
Nothing has spoiled yet and the machine is OK.
(Hope I havent tempted fate saying that!)0 -
Wash away - but remember to check ALL the pockets - one mobile phone and one mp3 player did not come out of the washing machine very happily - although the rucksack was like a new pin!

I always wash backpacks too and if you are unlucky to lose the top part of the zip you can always insert a curtain ring to help open it.
Some of the backpacks have a stiff panel in the bottom which is cardboad based and I find it best to remove this prior to washing.
Hope you`re impressed with the result!0 -

An old keyring does the job too

Hi frostyspice,
A similar thing happened to my son's rucksack type schoolbag. I discovered on the last day of the Christmas holidays that it contained a two week old spilled yoghurt and a squashed banana. There was no time to get him another bag, so I bunged it in the washing machine at 40 degrees and hoped for the best.......it came out like new. :j Let us know how you get on with yours.
