One other thing my OH is not very computer literate. Is the MS Money package easy to use?
I have no idea how much the upgrade would cost! Can anybody confirm that the upgrade will be required?

I use Money 99, because it was being given away free by a stationary company a couple of years ago. I've thought about upgrading but I don't think I want to after looking into it a bit, and trying to set up money 2002(? - a more recent edition anyway) for my sister.
It really is useful. My favourite chart is the bank account balance history graph so you can see how much money you have in total over the past year (or whatever period you want) in all your accounts (or a subset). This is handy for seeing if the trend is down or up! Currently it is tracking 19 different "accounts" so it really helps to see it all in one place!:shhh: There's somewhere you can go and get books to read... for free!

It is part of another thread which went off topic but it covers various versions you just need to pick out the relevant bits

Hiya,
I've only just started using it, and still not fully used to the functions of it. I've managed to log my IPA, my Gym membership and wages, but the rest I've not got round to yet.
I think it will be very useful when I get my head round it though.

Call me anal, but I also have a "cash" account. If I withdraw money at the cash machine, this is treated as a transfer into my cash account. It also means that I can log all those pennies spent instead of seeing the black hole of "cash withdrawals" in my budget!
Another couple of points from various people: I use Money 2004. The 2005 version disappointed a ot of people who had used earlier versions or who had used Quicken, and yes the stock market data is time-barred on it to 2007. If you can pick up a 2004 version (or earlier) cheap then do that as there's really no fundamental differences between the versions other than how pretty the interface is.
There's a couple of free Financial Management programs kicking around out there but I've never rated any of them and they're nowhere near the standard of MS Money.0 -

I've found MoneyDance to be useful. It comes with a free trial, which gives you an opportunity to evaluate it.
Details are here: https://www.moneydance.com0 -
I've downloaded and have just started using MoneyManager from here http://www.thezeal.com/software/ seems ok for a freebie.
Note that you need to also download the Microsoft .NET framework for it to work0 -
I've been using MS Money for a couple of years and just couldn't live with it now. Wish I'd been using it years ago! I'm not joking when I say its saved me hundreds of pounds so definitely worth it. This is because I'm now aware of what I've got coming in/going out on a monthly basis - no idea how I kept track of things before! Can budget so much better etc. I don't utilise all the futures and don't fancy linking into the Internet banking etc. So I have to enter all transactions manually. However if you do it every day (sad eh?!) its not a chore.0
