Experiences of fractured tibia?

Cutting a long story short, i fell on Sunday and have a fracture of the "tibial plateau" the part of your tibia thats just underneath your kneecap. I'm now in a cast from twinkle to ankle
, and will admit to enjoying being sat with my feet up since i got back from A&E on Monday morning.
I'm just wondering what others have experienced if you have gone through the same thing, and if anyone has any ideas on hints for aiding a speedy recovery? Good food to eat? Ive been thinking calcium is good for bones, and that needs vitaminD, yep, a spot of sunbathing would be great but im struggling to get outside and sit in it
I will make it clear im not looking for medical advice, just tips, thoughts and ideas, all welcome

Hi- homeopathic remedies like Symphytum and Ruta graveolens might be worth exploring? Might be worth hobbling to a local homeopath if you have one close by? Good luck with your recovery.0

Hi there, I broke my tibia and fibula but further down towards my shin and had a cast from my groin to my toes as there was absolutely no support so it had to be full length. I was in that cast for approx 2 months then in a shorter knee cast for another 6 weeks.
I found that putting my foot up on an upturned plastic crate in the bath while sitting in about 2 inches of water was enough to get washed without wetting the back thigh part of the cast.
Also, take your time when adjusting to moving around as it is quite easy to fall when you have a leg that doesn't bend. I started off shuffling upstairs on my bum with a belt looped through my crutches and slung over my shoulder.
A flask with a loop of string to sling over your shoulder is a must as well. I'm not sure what type of crutches you have but mine were the full height wooden ones that go under your armpits and I wasn't allowed to put any weight on the ball of my cast for quite a long time so I had to do everything on 1 leg and with no use of my hands.
If you have someone at home with you its fine but left alone you learn to be quite inventive0 -
Thanks for your tips floyd, ive been wondering how im going to get a decent bath keeping the cast out of the water. I havnt got a crate but i have got a plastic toddler step that'll serve the same purpose. Flask has been awkward, i put it in a carrier bag to carry, but found the bag sort of swung as i was hopping, so it was a bit precarious, its given me the idea to run a belt though it to use as a shoulder strap, I'm on those crutches that have a hoop just above the elbow, but i still cant use my hands cos i need both of them to hold the crutches. Upstairs is a bum shuffle with a long bandage looped under the bottom of my foot so i can support and steer my leg go-kart style, lol!
Im also looking at no load bearing for 6-8 weeks, lucky in as much as my 16 year old son lives with me and is helping out a little bit, and my ex, who still lives local has been absolutely ace, comming round 2/3 times a day to see what i need help with.
Now, any ideas how to get me own pants on :rotfl:cos i cant reach the toes of my plastered leg to get them on

Go commando?! :eek::rotfl:
Hope you're feeling better soon!0 -
I was told by the Doctor to lay off coke and diet coke, and it can hinder the fusing of the break. Something in the coke reacts against the calcium.
I broke the small bones in my ankle, and tore three large ligaments.0 -
Pants are a doddle with a coat hanger
Hold one side of the pants with the toes of your good leg and hook the other side of them with the curly part of a coat hanger or use a long wooden spoon. It takes a bit of wiggling but you'll find you will be alot more flexible after a few weeks.
After 4 weeks of the full length cast I could not only touch my toes but curl my hands round the soles of my feet as well.
Do any of your kids have a little backpack/rucksack you can borrow to carry bits and bobs around in? Flask, butties etc so it saves multiple trips0 -
ask the hospital to lend you a zimmer frame, I recently broke my fibula & until I could weight bare I had one as I couldn't balance, tie a carrier bag on the front for your bits.
When you get bathed put your leg in a black sack & seal the top with duct tape.
Have a barstool in the kitchen to perch on, then you can cook or supervise.
when you get your pot off, your skin wil be very dry, try to soak in the bath every day for the first few days & exfoliate, then slap on tons of moisturiser.0 -
Good tips there Natalie. When my cast came off I had really bad ingrowing hairs on my leg and some of the follicles are still damaged 16 years later (hairs tend to grow under by choice)!
I tried the duct tape thing for mine but because of how high up my cast went I got a very painful bikini wax into the bargain0 -

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:Cazza! I would definately have gone for this option were it not for the fact that the ex has been coming round and helping me get dressed ! As it is, had to lol at him a couple of nights ago - " I suppose a sh@gs ot the question?" "How d'ya feel about a cast in the 'ollocks":D sez I.......

Thanks floyd, have sorted the rucksack out already, and this morning, for the first time i managed to hook my pants over my toes
I went back to the fracture clinic yesterday and am now the proud owner of a new shiny bright red cast, still from top to bottom though. It turns out that i have done alot of damage to my ligaments as well, and that why im finding it hard to get about because i cant support the weight of my leg, and now i know that, i also know that the pain has been where my ligaments are, and it helps to know what you are feeling and why. The loop of bandage i made round the bottom of my foot has been a godsend for lifting my leg on and off the chair i rest it up on.
Thanks for staying with me everyone, its appreciated
