Can We get a reduction on council tax?

Can anyone shed a bit of light? My son is 17 and doing an electrical apprenticeship. He has been told that we can have our council tax band reduced by one band if he is earning £80.00 a week or less. Is this correct?

You wont get any reduction in your Council Tax Band for him being an apprentice (only a Valuation office re-banding or disabled band relief can reduce your band), what you can do though is apply for an apprentice disregard for him so that he will no longer be counted when the Council Tax is calculated.
If (in addition to your son) there are two or more other adults in the house who are not disregarded for Council Tax purposes, then although he can still qualify for the disregard, it would not reduce the amount of Council Tax you pay.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0
