A friend and I went in Comet / Currys and Pc World to look at Televisions, despite offering cash and able to take the merchandise away there was no room for a discount!
My friend then said he wanted to buy TWO (treating me) and still no discount!!!!
All the consumer Commentators say to haggle but they wouldn't budge!!!
He bought two in the end but not 1p off !!!!
Anybody manage to haggle???

I would've walked away personally ,especially as they were buying 2 .
I'd visit the shop first ,see what i'm after then go home & surf the net for the cheapest from the comfort of home .Gotta love a good bargain !0 -
You gave in too easily, you can't expect to ask for a discount and get it straight away, you have to push and, if need be, walk away from the store and try another rival store and start playing them against each other.
I went too and fro from a Comet and a Dixons, took me a couple of hours leg work, but in the end I got £150 off of an already discounted LCD TV. They were desperate to get my custom so were prepared to undercut each other until one eventually gave in and refused to go lower...but to save me going back, Dixons did offer me the TV at the same lowest price that Comet gave me.We have removed your signature - please contact the forum team if you are not sure why - Forum Team0 -
After going to 3 stores my friend is elderly so gave up! He chose against Argos in the hope of a discount and collecting the goods there and then.
I can't complain as a surprise present BUT would have hope that he would of got an add on or money off.0 -

I'd have walked away and bought online with quidco or similar... 4% or so of £1200 coulda been quite nice...0

Personally I wouldn't haggle for items in "big" shops, it's something I relate to car boot/jumble sales.
Having worked in retail some customers expect a discount straight away, even on the cheaper goods. Sometimes the cost/profit on these items is so low, it is not worth discounting the goods as they could well lose money!
Also, not sure about these retailers, but cash isn't really that powerful anymore. It's actually more of a pain than a customer just paying by card as had to be banked/collected etc.Grocery challenge - Nov: £52/£100

This question pops up a lot these days!
Apparently Dixons/Comet/Currys are making so little on these items that they can't afford to give discounts as they would lose money.
Someone will invariably pay the price advertised so they can hold out.
Alternatively they can run promotions on them and make the money on the peripherals they sell with it.
Apparently you should ask for "extras" such as HDMI leads or the stand it goes on to be discounted.
Not tried it yet though, so I could be talking out of my 'arris.0
