Help me buy food!!!

:money: Hi all this may sound really silly but every time and I mean every time I go to the supermarket I get to till and think there is nothing to eat in the trolley!
I cant really afford to keep doing this and then I end up with food for a couple of days and not much else, so please could you tell me things I could buy that will get me a couple of meals?
I buy chicken breats and get a couple of meals out of that but that is about it then I am buying ready meals.

thanks all

  • Sounds like you need to meal plan make a shopping list then stick to it:D .
Check out the Old Style Forums on MSE for good advice. It`s surprising when you plan things how much junk staus on supermarket shelves and out of your cupboard:D :D .
I don`t always meal plan but do buy lots of fresh veg/meat and rarely buy ready meals.

    Good luck
  • I agree, plan what you're having for a week. Or plan 7 meals so you can swap days, then buy the ingredients for them.

ALWAYS go with the shopping list. Then at least if you put some junk in the trolley you still have meals.

Or instead of buying ready meals, make a big pot of something like bolognese then freeze it into portions. If anything they can be used as emergency rations when youve found yourself with no dinner. Be alot healthier/cheaper than supermarket ones.

  • Yeah I agree, like many others, we used to go out grocery shopping and pick up whatever we thought we needed to get though the week. But now by making a set menu the weekend ahead, we could see just what we needed and bought only that and can cut down cost.
  • thanks all I will try this out next week and see if i can resist the urge to by rubbish!

  • Stock up on tinned tomatoes, useful base for loads of meals I find! Cook with chopped veg in, cooked with chopped meat/seafood in, use for casserole or bolognese etc.

We usually have a big bag of frozen mince in too, handy for shepherd's pie, stews, bolognese etc.

    Excellent tips there :)

I buy all those things. With the veg, I normally buy one of the mixed seasonal veg bags from Asda (about £1.20) and normally get a couple of casseroles out of them, plus sides of veg for other meals, and they have potatoes in them.

I use my slow cooker alot for loads of different meals. I normally (not always) frozen meat as its cheaper. The Smart price frozen Chicken filletts are ok, as is their diced lamb too. I normally buy a range of spices and herbs from my asian shop (much cheaper than supermarket) to add into things. The tinned Tomatoe suggestion above is a must I think.
I know my spelling is shocking  It is alot better than it used to be though :rotfl:

I agree, in that the Old Style board is your answer.
Try the weekly meal planner, if it suits you.
