I think it is normally best to let the firm make the moves. They need to be very careful when dealing with these type of issues and follow the correct procedure. If they step out of line they are leaving themselves wide open.0

To answer Op's question, I think you would be better waiting for your employer to go through the route of capability and dismissal on medical grounds. If you resign of your own accord then it can lead to all sorts of problems with entitlement to benefits etc.
I know someone with similar problems and they have been advised by their cpn that they believe it will be at least 12-18 months with meds/psych etc before the cpn believed they would be in a position to even contemplate a return to any sort of work (I'm not saying this to worry you, just to be realistic about the likelyhood of a return to work).
Don't worry about the dismissal re any future CV if you become able to work again - you can always just state on CV left do to health problems at the time, and explain in detail at an interview.
BTW, my friend was able to get DLA (care and mobility) and incap benefit (ESA for new claimants) and her other half also claimed carers allowance, and I do not believe their problems were as acute as yours seem to be, so don't worry too much about that at the moment.
