DIY Table Runners

Hi,

To tie in with our black and white theme, I was thinking of getting these for our tables:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/WEDDING-TABLE-BED-RUNNER-IN-BLK-WHITE-DAMASK-FABRIC_W0QQitemZ330313930129QQihZ014QQcategoryZ131605QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1262?_trksid=p1742.m153.l1262
But then I got to thinking that maybe it would be cheaper if I made my own. I’ve googled ‘DIY table runners’ and they look pretty easy to make (especially if you use hemming web!), but I was wondering whether anyone here had done this and had any tips, e.g. what type of fabric to use, etc. Also, is it really as easy as I think it is?!

Thanks x

I was going to suggest organza runners. Instead of worrying about the sewing of the edges, get some ribbon anything from 1cm to 1" width and STICK it just to cover the edge. The glue will stop the edges fraying.

PS.Hemming web, wonder web or whatever, aint always as easy as you have to fold the edges. Ribbon and glue, far easier.

Thanks for the tips ladies. Will have a look for some organza later.

Lindaatno9, what kind of glue would you recommend using?

    Thanks x

Fabric glue is best but good ole PVA works just as well. It dries clear!!

I've been having exactly this dilemma!! I think the ribbon and organza idea is great and may have solved my problems!!

they would be easiest to make if you had straight ends, rather than coming to a point. You could have a trim on the ends - black beaded would look nice? Then you are just working with a rectangle of fabric.

You can always buy iron on jewels to really spruce them up.
I use my organza wrap I got married in as a table runner for all our occasions. I even sprinkle pot pourri rose petals or buy star or heart confetti, or even glitter and sprinkle it over the table. You can buy the confetti at most greeting card outlets.
