Hi,
Hope there are some wine experts on the forum can give me a bit of advice:
I need to buy a few bottles of good, but not too expensive RED wine, preferably French or Italian, and under £6. So I searched on Tesco and found a few half price wines. The problem is I don't really know wine, therefore if anyone has tried these wine, please could you let me know what you think. (These are currently half price, so I thought would be good value for money. But if there are other wine that are not half price but meet my criteria above, and you think are better than these, please also let me know)
Les Tuguets Madiran, French, £5.49
La Grande Classique Corbieresred, French £4.49
Baron De Courcelle St Emilion, French, £7.49
Famiglia Terraccia Chianti Riserva, Italian, £4.99
Many thanks.

The first thing to say is that the ‘half price’ offers on wine in Tesco (and the other supermarkets) are not entirely genuine. That is to say they comply with the regulations about showing price reductions but are very poor value at the claimed ‘full price’. Ignore the offer – the reduced price is a much fairer reflection of their true value.
My best recommendation is Tesco Finest Nero d’Avola – currently £5.99, often promoted to £4.49. It is in the current finest £9 meal deal, which looks good value.
If you want French, try Tautavel (£5.99) or Crozes Hermitage (£6.49) – again, both in Tesco finest range.0 -
I'd second the recommendation for the Tautavel. From the list you show, I would steer clear of the St Emilion simply because, in my experience, it can be very variable and it's quite hard to find truly good St Emilion.A [STRIKE]B[/STRIKE][STRIKE]C [/STRIKE]D E [STRIKE]F[/STRIKE]G H I J K L M N O P Q R S [STRIKE]T[/STRIKE]U V [STRIKE]W [/STRIKE]X Y Z0

Awards...
Well. The trouble with almost all wine medals is that the judges taste quite large numbers of wines quite quickly. The winners tend to be wines that are made to 'show off' in such a situation. In particular, tasting (sniff, sip, slurp, spit and move on to the next wine) is quite different from drinking, with or without food. So awards need to be treated with a bit of caution.
That said, The International Wine Challenge and Decanter World Wine Awards are both respectable. Wines winning trophies and both Gold and Silver medals are tasted and re-tasted to make sure that they really are worthy of the medal. Bronze and Commended get less scrutiny are are perhaps less reliable indicators.0 -
