Maybe this one isn't a scam?

  • Thanks to all of you for your latest replies. All very helpful.

I had that thought too, that if it was a scam, they'd be asking you to buy the foot pedal directly from them. If they're asking you to buy it from somewhere else, I think it probably means they are legit. What would a scammer get out of getting you to buy a foot pedal from somewhere else? I understand what you mean though, that they could get you to do the work and then not pay you.

As I said though, if you have a look at their website it does look genuine to me and the fact they're registered on the Duport website.

However, I have still heard nothing from them. If they are legit, they probably took one look at me saying about my illness and disregaded me. Maybe, I shouldn't have been so honest! Then again, all the vacancies could already have been filled. Would have been nice if they'd replied and said that though.

Thanks for the info Voyager. Maybe I could e-mail universities to see if they need any transcribers? As you say, it is something that could be done from home but from what you've said, might be quite taxing for someone who's not in the best of health, like myself!

    Thanks again everyone

I thought the ad just said you had to buy the pedal, it didn't say one way or the other where you have to buy it from!

It could be that once they have you on the hook they hit you with having to buy it from them and them alone.

If they stated that you had to buy it from them in the ad then you would naturally think it was a scam. But by not saying they can get you on the hook.
  • Agreed. If they asked me to purchase the pedal only from them, I would definitely think it a scam. I'll probably never know though, as it doesn't look like they're going to get back to me!

    Cheers

I don't think this is a scam. I am a home based transcriber and it's par for the course that you obtain a foot pedal, but not essential, as the software I use also incorporate's 'hot' keys which enable you to stop, start, rw and ff from your keyboard. If finances are a problem for you at the moment then it's up to you if you wish to say you have a pedal and then use the hot keys. Frankly as you have to stop typing to either stop/start/ff or rw then it's not a great deal of difference between clicking with your foot or tapping the necessary F hotkey. The free software I use, and recommend, is Express Scribe if you want to check it out before perhaps looking elsewhere for transcription work.

There are a lot of companies requiring transcriber's and if you are a fast typist with a good comand of the English language then it's quite easy to prepare once you have a few WAV's under your belt.

it sounds to me as if you can earn 7.50 an hour IF you can type at 65 wpm thats words per minute..........hmmmmmmmm i cant and i have typing certs for 45 wpm at rsa level from a few years back. with distinctions i may add, i would be very careful here - i smell a scam but have nothing to back it up

People doing transcription already, where do you get your clients from? I applied to the Transcription Agency yonks ago, but not heard anything yet, other than then saying that they were hoping to open up recruitment again in October and that they would contact me again then, and anything I've bid for on elance or the like I've been outbid by people willing to work for basically nothing.

I haven't marketed my services as yet, not sure how to approach unis etc - do you just email the different departments and put notices up in the different schools (assuming you can get access?). Maybe I should do this in freshers week and 'blend' in as a student?!

    Hi there
I know it's a daft question but please can someone tell me what's involved in transcribing. What equipment is required? I am a pretty good typist and reasonably fast. I'm looking for extra work when I go to uni in September.
