Dye for cotton fabric

I have, amongst my fabric collection, loads of very high quality shirting fabric. I am wondering about using it to make some summer clothes but I don't want everything I wear to be white with stripes! I was wondering about trying to dye it with some deeper colours before sewing. The stripes will still show but I'm hoping that they might be a bit more subtle. I wondered if anyone can recommend any dyes (possibly machine wash ones) that fix uniformly and reliably with dark colours eg blue, purple, dark green or possibly grey.
Many thanks.
Many thanks.

Hi Broomstick,
I have sucessfully dyed many things using Dylon machine dyes and as your fabric is cotton it should take well. I used to buy Dylon dyes in woolworths but my local chemists sell it too. Have a look at their website for more information:

Wilko's also sell dylon dyes, I noticed them next to the knitting wool0

I too use these all the time and they are very good. I get my from Wilko's and TescoTopCashback £1792.63My Little World0

This is great. Thank you all so much.
Can you tell me how well the dyed fabric washes after using machine-wash Dylon? Does the colour fade any more than usual? We use fairly mild non-bio powder and 40 degree washes usually.
Also, I saw on the website (very helpful link) that they sell dye remover as well. Has anyone tried this? I am wondering if I could lift the dye out of the stripes completely.

We've used Dylon successfully and it doesn't seem to fade any faster than 'normal'
I've never tried dye remover but I'm not sure you could do it in stripes.
The only thing I would warn you about is the weight requirement. It really does make a difference to the colour if you put more or less in the washer.0 -
Check what your clothes are made of first! I used some blue Dylon on my red hoodie and while most of it turned a nice shade blue, the stitching remained red - it was made of a different material so it didn't dye. I liked the effect though!0
