why do people insist on coming on MSE posting things like this rather than just going back to the shop for a refund/exchange?!

    the mind really boggles...

IMHO a verbal apology would not be good enough - threaten to go to Environmental Health, especially if you've got your receipt to corroborate your purchase.

Absolutely. I'd hold out for the death penalty, or at the very least £1000000 in compensation. :rotfl:

This is a minor infraction involving an item that was placed in a 'reduced' fridge being one day past the 'Use By' date, which as anyone with half a brain knows does not present a risk to life and limb.

Not to diss the OP's 'food hygiene' training but meat - minced or otherwise - that's one day past the 'Use By' date doesn't go mouldy and it doesn't kill people. Let's keep this in perspective, eh?
  • ..and the meat should have been hung for quite a few days before it gets to the shop anyhow! With it being presumably wrapped and still in a chiller cabinet, I'd certainly eat it.

I ate coconut milk in a curry the other day that was 2 years out of date! And I'm still here to tell the tale.

They didn't have dates in the olden days.

If it aint green and mouldy, eat it!

    Thats my twopenneth.

PS OP I don't really think a gift voucher apology is warranted, as someone else mentioned the dates are clear when you buy the product and it was reduced.

Here we go again - somebody posts an innocent request for some advice on what other people think might be an acceptable 'offer' re out of date food and every man and his dog jumps down the poor womans throat !!!

She wasn't implying she expected a massive compensation pay out and she wasn't making an unreasonable fuss so why are so many people so quick to repond in an unpleasant, rude manner ?

She (or her Mum) bought something that shouldn't have been on sale. It wouldn't have poisoned her (and , anyway, she didn't eat it cos she noticed the date in time) but the point is that M&S shouldn't have had it on sale. Its an offence and they could get into a fair bit of trouble if she reported them to EH.

She clearly isn't even tempted to do that and she is going to give M&S a chance to put it right and presumably she is going to be pleasant and friendly about it. I would hope that M&S would apologise, thank her VERY nicely for letting them know - and then give her a little 'sweetener' to emphasise their thanks ie a full refund and a replacement product (or possibly a small gift voucher).

She is being reasonable and I would expect M&S to respond in a similar manner. I don't see the relevance of all these 'get a life' etc comments.

  • Absolutely right tbw!

Obviously 'use by' and 'sell by' dates were initiated for a purpose ... and food safety regulations should be adhered to by retailers.

Now then lv1109 ... what went on in the "olden days" isn't relevant to today's practices (surely?)

In fact, perhaps those who suggested that the OP should 'get a life' should themselves 'get a life' and stop adding pointless replies to a discussion thread!

    ZED.

Personally, I would have eaten the meat anyway, after having a good sniff. But, if I had taken it back, I would expect an apology and a new packet of mince, in date. Accidents happen and fortunately no one has become ill.

agree with tbw some very bitter, nasty and unthoughtful people on this place.

As long as you take the packet and the receipt back with you, you should get a full refund. anything else is at their discretion, if you maybe speak to the manager they might give you a refund and a replacement. the csa don't always have that authority to give you freebies.

my daughter ordered her food online from Asda,it was the first time (and Last) she had a really large order includeing meat for the month, when she went to use some chicken, when defrosted noticed it had gone off, when checking all the other meat, noticed the use by date was the date she recieved it,contacted the store by phone and e-mailed them but had no reply,as the store is about half an hour away not easy to pop to,needless to say she wont do that again.
    joyce

I ordered my shopping from asda online and a few bits i got ran out of date within a day or 2 of the delivery, i completed the form on asda website to say I would expect them to have a longer date on them and within 1 day i got an email apologising for this and to say they would refund my money for the items no problems :)
