Tin of out of date Coconut Milk - opinions please

Hi all,

I am doing a lamb curry today (courtesy of a recipe I found on here!) and knew I had a tin of coconut milk in the cupboard. When I got the bits out today ready for later I noticed that the coconut milk went out of date beginning of 2007:eek: . I actually wish I hadn't looked but wanted opinions on whether this could be ok to eat or not (skint and don't really want to buy another tin but if I have to I will). I think I am cautious in this case because its "milk" but its not actually dairy is it? I don't actually worry about dates in general, if its not green or furry I will eat it :rotfl: but don't want to take a chance with 2 years out of date if someone thinks it will be dangerous.

Thanks in advance!

  • Because we can't see it nobody on an internet forum can really give you good advice. If I were you I would open it, sniff it, taste a tiny bit and then decide whether or not I want to risk it. Its a judgement call and you are the only one who can make that.

Well milk in the strictest meaning is lactated fluid, so coconut "milk" isn't really "milk".
I would think of it like a fruit or vegatable product in a tin. Would you eat a tin of fruit salad from 2007 (I have and no problems).
Tinned stuff keeps for years and years, I heard of tins from the first world war still having edible contents, plus being cooked should wipe out any "nasties".

But as PTT says only you can decide, if it is going to worry you through the meal you won't enjoy it.

    Thanks Ali!

Well I went home at lunchtime, opened the tin and it seemed fine. Smelt like coconut milk with no manky tinge to it. Tasted it and it tasted like coconut milk. I went ahead and made up my curry sauce base, and its all now in the slow cooker with the meat thats been in there since this morning to cook through for the rest of the day ready for tea tonight.
