  • Just a quick update. This is a no-go, it was too good to be true. One of my creditors said yes, bless them it was a catalogue to whom I owed 159.00.

So bankruptcy is my only route.

Am very annoyed with my doctor, not about him not being able to write off the debts, but for telling me in the the first place that he categorically could, I think this very cruel. I can see he was trying to be nice, but it still hurts like hell. In my experience Dr's are usually very adept at never making promises?

Reseraching online and working with my adviser at the CAB write offs have been known, but only in very execptional circumstances :( whatever they are.

Thanks for your help and advice anyway
  • Hi,
I think each case is different and your GP thought he could help. He should not have got your hopes up though.

I have a friend who is bi-polar and she had all her credit card debt written off, but in her case it could be shown that she had a job and was managing and then they changed her medication, she had a very bad 2 months in which she spent over 10K on various cards before getting the medication under control. At the time she was earning around 12,000 a year. Her advisor could show that the level of spending was a direct result of the illness by showing all her previous statements which had a very regular spending pattern on them.

Are the CAB advising you on the bankruptcy route?

  • Hi Gilligansyle,

This is very similar to my situation. I had a great job, but after a year of medication changes I was up to my eyes in debt and then had to leave my job. My loan protection didn't kick in because BP was a pre -exsiting condition since 2000. A right mess!

Yes The CAB are advising me on bankruptcy and I have now accepted this. My illness has got worse, this all happened in 2003/4, unfortunately I am now classed as having a severe mental illness and have been awarded high rate DLA for the next 5 years. Im a mess, but maybe bankruptcy may give me my life back?

    Thanks for listening

I wanted to complain about getting credit when I was having an episode- one of my creditors told me I didn't meet their lending criteria but gave me a loan anyway. CAB said they would, but then didn't send the letters and changed their mind. Despite the legislation, I don't think it works out very often.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.
  • Ames, I agree, hopefully some day it will be legitimately recognised that credit is highly toxic to Bipolars, and I mean recognised and UNDERSTOOD. I have lived for 5 years without borrowing now, but I still have the ramifications of that 1 sustained manic episode which was 7 years ago hanging over me.

Hope you keep well and thanks
