Am I correct in thinking you can't get rid of rust? I've seen something on ebay I'd like to buy that has a bit of rust and wondered if it was possible to clean up...

i think it all depends on the metal and what the item is .
there is a thing called rust eater but it would depend on what you are using it on0 -
Rust can be difficult to remove depending on where it is on the item and how deep it goes but it can be done with emmery cloth and glasspaper/wet & dry. Whatever you use you will need to remember that you will be reducing the size of the object when you remove the rust, if it is around bar for example 25mm diameter and the rust is quite bad, you could end up with a bar 24.8mm or less by the time you have removed it all.0

It's a stand, it's on the legs... doesn't look very bad on the pics but can't decide whether to go for it or not!

If there are no flakes it should not be too hard to polish it up, just a bit of elbow grease and the sweat off your brow as my father was fond of saying.0

the mirror in my bathroom has a chrome surround, and as it is always cold and damp in there it gets rusty. I just attack it every so often with a brillo pad. It works for me.Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination:beer:

If its a bit of surface rust you should just be able to rub it off with a bit of emery paper or wire wool. Can you paint the item - if so a tin of hammerite should stop it rusting again once you've rubbed it down0

My brother used to swear by a little bit of ordinary earth on an old cloth for removing rust spots0
