hand held blender not behaving itself

I was just making some soup and tried to blend it with a handheld blender thingy - like a stick with whirly blades on the end.
Result: SOUP EVERYWHERE.
I have not used one of these before, am I doing it wrong?!
When I had my own house I had a normal food processor type thing which I got on fine with but now I'm someone's lodger I have to use what is here. *sigh*

Hiya,
Oh dear, you poor thing! I did that first time too! I think you need to make sure the blade on it is fully submerged in the soup before pressing the button, but I'm sure one of the other girls will correct me if I'm wrong.

make sure it's in the soup before you switch it on and switch it off before taking it out...Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan

deeper bowl?
does the blade have a cover over it?, just wondering if its broken, if the cover was missing then yes the soup would go everywhere.
should look like this:

Mines a bit like this too - it's better if you hold the shaft vertically rather than at an angle. Sometimes with more watery stuff I have to transfer if to a taller narrower container to stop it splashing.0 -
It's brand new, just took it out of its wrapper today. The blade cover is there.
I might try it in a narrower container as it was in a large pan so a relatively shallow depth of soup. Thought it would be enough but obviously not!

i use a narrow jug and put the blended portion in a bowl, takes a few blitzes to get it all done but then it doesn't spray out everywhere

I put the blender right at the bottom of the soup, one side almost resting on the bottom of the pan and the other at a slight upward angle, and I don't move it around much. Mine's not messy, maybe you've just got a duff blender.Mortgage started on 22.5.09 : £129,600Overpayments to date: £3000June grocery challenge: 400/6000
