  • Hi noynoy

I didn't want to read and run.

As your bank are aware and you have a fraud number you should be fine. Everyone that I know that has had a card clone problem has managed to get it all sorted out, although it does seem to take a couple of months sometimes.

Did the bank say whether you should call the police or do anything to safeguard your other cards??? Do you have an idea where it might have happened (petrol stations and restaurants that you have used - they seem to be prime targets for cloners) and have you used other cards there?

Something like happened to me, except I didn't lose any money. I went to pay for some petrol (luckily only £10 worth) and my card was declined. When I went into the bank the next day I was told the police had found my card details "somewhere" and my card had been stopped. I'm 99.9% certain I got done at a petrol station. As I said, no money was actually taken from my account, I got a new card issued and haven't had any problems since.
  • This happened to us a few weeks ago. My husband's card was cloned and we have no idea how as he is very careful. I tried to get some money out and was puzzled why I couldn't, then later Halifax called to say someone had used it in Australia to the value of around £300. Halifax were very quick though and the money was refunded about a week later.

It has made us very wary about using cards in strange places and when I go to Australia next week I intend to just use cash.
  • I had the same problem about two years ago.

I was in the isle of wight waiting to pay for some petrol and my debit card was refused (three days after pay day  ).

After talking to my bank, it turned out my card had been used in Sri Lanka five times in the past three days. My bank stopped the card, put the foreign transactions on hold and extended my overdraft by the balance of the disputed transactions. They said that if I wanted to withdraw cash in branch, I should bring my card, cheque book and ID. They put the money back in my account before they'd even investigated :T

Unfortunately, a week later I got a phonecall at my desk from Capital One asking me if I was in Australia. Given that they'd called an 020 7 number, they swiftly deduced that I was actually in London and the fraud didn't go through.

Long story there but 'fortunately' because I had both cards cloned in a short space of time, I managed to pin-point where it had been done, passed the info onto the police and they arrested one of the workers...

It's not always strange places though - mine was a BP garage!
