You won't get Walkers or Asda's crisps in Spain

You would, but they're called Lays and they don't do salt & vinegar.

As for balsamic vinegar, no - vinegar is not just vinegar. There are several levels of quality, like there are with olive oil, which is why some bottles cost £1 and some cost £20. But I've seen identical bottles in 99p Store that cost £4 in supermarkets. Not sure why that would be confusing, different shops charge a different mark-up on the same product. For example, some rather posh vanilla extract on sale for £4 in Tesco is on sale for £11 in Selfridges, because Selfridges can get away with that sort of thing but Tesco can't. Which is just down to brand reputation, and is utterly meaningless.

Oh, and Galaxy IS cheap chocolate. It has a brand name but it's not very high quality (check out the cocoa solids percentage and amount of added sugar and fat). And since they changed the recipe, it tastes even more like economy chocolate.
  • Brands bore me... always the same things. I love buying the 'wierd' brands that appear in places like Home Bargain, 99p shop etc - Rhubarb and Aloe Vera White Choc, for example :D I'll take that over yet another bar of Dairy Milk any day!

Has anyone apart from me bothered to compare prices at these shops with local supermarkets?

Nope, we are all so thick we would never think of doing something so ingenious.
  • Totally. We don't come on this site to save money, it's for the lulz.
Undergrad law student. Take my advice with a pinch of salt! :rotfl:
  • I buy huge bottles of sweet chilli sauce from our 99p store - compared to small ones in Asda, it's a great bargain. also they sell jars of olives, capers etc which work out much cheaper and are of good quality - I think they are polish brands.

the 99p store will be the death of £land, purely on the massive range they have.

Yes of course it is! nobody is disputing that!!!! but his reasons for buying well known branded products (and so are yours) and not founded on any evidence whatsoever that they are 'better' than less known brands, it is purely down to clever advertising and marketing.

you can get branded stuff abroad but it costs more due to the importing of it.

Surely vinegar is vinegar, balsamic or otherwise?

Vinegar might be ( althought the really cheap stuff is non brewed condiment , hence cheaper ) but balsamic vinegar can vary greatly and on the whole the more expensive it it , the better it tastes .

On the whole Branded food does , imho , taste better then non branded food
