How about this for a cheap printer, not sure of it`s photo print quality. For text printing,at this price, it must be nearly as cheap as buying a new black ink cart for one of the more expensive printers.

Hi - How do you refill them? Do you take them to a shop?halifax wrote:This is also known as a Dell 720 which they occasionally known out at a tenner inc del. It comes with trial size cartridges (half size) but I have refilled these for the last year. I decent ecconomy printer - even at £18 quid.

Also lookign at the ink prices that go with the printer - why are the larger sizes cheaper than the smaller ones?0 -

I would say that this is not the best buy for your purpose. The print quality is fairly low, the ink cartridges are mega expensive, and it's rather slow.
If you only need black and white, then I would wholeheartedly recommend the Samsung ML1610 laser printer at £49.95 from PC World at the moment. If quality of the printing is important for your work then you will appreciate the difference. The only snag with this printer is that the laser cartridges are mega expensive too. However, you can get cheap toner refills at https://www.consumablecafe.co.uk They show instructions on their site for refilling these toner cartridges - have a look and see whether this is something that you would be able/prepared to do. This is what they say:
The ML1610 is relatively easy to refill. Simply remove the right hand end panel by using a small screwdriver to remove 2 tiny screws which will then give you access to a small circular plug which needs to be carefully removed before you can refill the toner cartridge. It is always good practice the first time you attempt to refill a toner cartridge to shake out any toner powder remaining in the cartridge (simply throw it away in a plastic bag) and gently clean the green roller using a lint-free cloth which removes any chance of toner contamination and will significantly increase the life of the roller if it is cleaned each time. Although you can refill a starter cartridge (the one which comes free with the printer) we tend not to recommend it only because they are only designed to print 1000 pages before failing whereas a genuine or remanufactured toner cartridge should be able to be refilled between 3-6 times (18,000+ sheets) or even more than this if you take the time to clean it each time.No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -
The LEXMARK inkjet printers MAY not be cost effective for most people as it's very hard to find CHEAP (ie CLONED) cartridges, hence you end up PAYING later or else messily refilling original cartridges. Similarly for HP ones.
Personally I like EPSON printers (and friend CANON) as you can typically find cloned ink cartridges for just 99p OR LESS at 7dayshop.com and some others. Have used them with my Epson C46 for a couple of years and very happy at 99p max per cartridge!0 -
I had problems with a couple of Epsons that were not used regularly. This meant that the ink dried in the print-heads and the printers would not, ummm, print. New print-heads cost more than the printers, so that was two printers in the bin.
That should not be a problem if you use the printers pretty regularly. If you go away on hoiday, you need to get someone to come in to print a couple of pages every so often .... They can water the plants at the same time.No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0
