Acupuncture for long term back pain

Options
My orthopaedic surgeon has decided to try me with acupuncture after a session of facet joint injections didn't work for me. As usual I forgot to ask questions... why do I always go blank at appointments?! Does anyone know how long I can expect the relief to last for after an acupuncture session? I remember her saying I will need several sessions before I get any relief, but i'm not sure how long the relief will last for. I really don't know what do expect, apart from what i've seen on TV. Thanks for your help and time in advance.

I love getting acupuncture done and it worked wonders for back pain for me.

I found it to be quite financially economical as I booked for 3 sessions but after the 2nd I skipped out the door.

If you get the chance to try it moxi-bustion (sp) acupuncture is amazing as the needles get this hot stuff on them and it is like getting heated up from the inside out - kind of like getting microwaved but hugely relaxing.
If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!

same here I was lucky enough to have a course prescribed when i was referred for physio. After the second session i was pain free for the first time in over a year, I had a course of 6 sessions and have not needed to go back since, about 5 months ago now.

Gosh, five months pain free! If that is what I have to look forward to, I can't wait. I'm on 30mg of dihydrocodeine four times a day. I'll do anything to reduce that.

Would you post how you get on? I have had facet joint injections without success.
  • Yes, no problem. I don't know when my appointment will come through. I have a feeling that it'll be quite soon from what was said at my appointment today. I'm only 32 and my quality of life is poor at the moment. My doctor is quite young and sympathsises with my situation. It is very difficult to hold down a full time job, look after a three year old and deal with constant pain.

Are they using Western acupuncture or traditional chinese acupuncture?
  • I'm sorry, but I don't know the answer to that. I was only told that she was doing a referal for me. She didn't really go into it much.

Mum had some Western acupuncture at the Pain Clinic but it didn't help her but it obviously helps other people so just go with an open mind and see what happens. From what the nurse said they can't judge in advance who it will help.
